Ericeira earned its UNESCO World Surfing Reserve status in 2011 — only the second location in the world to receive the designation, after Malibu. The reserve covers 4km of coastline north of the village, encompassing seven distinct surf spots ranging from mellow beach breaks to world-class reef waves. What makes Ericeira remarkable is not just the wave quality but the concentration: you can walk from break to break in 45 minutes, sampling everything from beginner-friendly rollers to the waves that have made pros famous.

The best surf months are September through April, when Atlantic low-pressure systems generate consistent NW swells and the water temperature sits between 16–19°C. Summer (June–August) is smaller, warmer, and more crowded — ideal for learning, less ideal for experienced surfers seeking power. The village itself is a genuine Atlantic fishing community, not a purpose-built resort, which keeps the character intact even as its global surf reputation grows.

Getting here is straightforward: 45 minutes from Lisbon by taxi or the A8 motorway, or an 80-minute bus from Lisbon's Sete Rios station. The village has enough accommodation for all budgets — surf houses, B&Bs, apartments, and a handful of boutique hotels, most of them a 10-minute walk from at least two surf breaks. Parking is easy outside summer weekends.

Ericeira rewards patience and commitment. Come for a week and surf every break at least once, eat every evening at a different taberna, and take one rest day for Sintra. The waves will still be there when you return — and you will return.
