Portugal's Barrel Capital
Peniche sits on a peninsula surrounded by ocean on three sides — which means waves break in some direction almost every day of the year. This geography makes it one of Europe's most consistent surf destinations, and the permanent home of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal WSL Championship Tour event draws the world's best surfers every October to compete at Supertubos.
Supertubos — Portuguese for "super tubes" — is the peninsula's signature wave: a left-hand beach break that throws powerful, hollow barrels over a sandy bottom. When a solid NW Atlantic swell hits on a rising tide, Supertubos produces some of the most photogenic barrels in European surfing. On those days, the world's best professionals and Portugal's top surfers compete for the best waves from sunrise to sunset. Watching from the elevated carpark is free, provides a perfect aerial view, and is unforgettable.
Beyond Supertubos, the peninsula and Baleal Island to the north offer waves for every level. Beginners find mellow, forgiving beach breaks on the protected south side of Baleal; intermediate surfers can tour the peninsula sampling different conditions in a single day; and advanced riders hit Supertubos on any swell over 1.5m. A dozen surf camps and schools operate year-round, many of them offering week-long packages with accommodation, lessons, and daily surfaris to the best spots depending on conditions.
The Berlengas Archipelago — 12km offshore and one of Portugal's most dramatic natural landscapes — is a non-surf highlight worth the boat trip. Combined with Peniche's fresh seafood, its fishing-town authenticity, and the Atlantic energy, this peninsula makes for an ideal one or two-week surf trip.

Breaks & Beyond in Peniche
Supertubos — World-Class Barrels
Supertubos ('super tubes') is Peniche's signature wave and the permanent home of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal WSL Championship Tour event. A powerful left-hand beach break, it produces thick, fast barrels that throw hollow lips over a sandy bottom. Best on a mid to rising tide with a solid NW swell, Supertubos goes from fun 1.5m to a terrifying 3m+ on big swells. The current sweeps along the beach — paddle hard, take your set, and exit via the north channel.
Baleal Island — Beginner Beach
Baleal sits on a tombolo island north of Peniche, connected by a narrow sand bar. Its four beaches face different directions, which almost guarantees surf in some form every day of the year. The protected southern bay (Lagide) is perfect for beginners — mellow waves, warm shallow water, and a dozen surf schools lining the bank. The northern exposed beach (Baleal) delivers more power for intermediates. Baleal's village strip has the peninsula's best post-surf restaurants and beach bars.
Cantinho da Baía — The Local Pointbreak
On the south side of Peniche peninsula, Cantinho da Baía offers a sheltered right-hand pointbreak that comes alive in S to SW swells — conditions when most of the north-facing breaks are blown out. The harbour break also works, producing wedgy shore-pound peaks. During the Rip Curl Pro, visiting surfers who can't paddle out at Supertubos head south to Cantinho for uncrowded fun waves while the professionals get the barrels. Bring a longer board for the softer south swell.
Berlengas Islands — Marine Reserve
Berlengas Archipelago is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve 12km off Peniche — a cluster of giant granite rocks and sea caves home to thousands of seabirds and some of the clearest water in Portugal. Boat trips run daily from Peniche harbour (45 minutes each way) in summer, dropping visitors for snorkelling in the turquoise coves or exploring the 17th-century Forte de São João Baptista. One of the most dramatic half-day boat trips on the Portuguese coast — book ahead in July and August.
Peniche Seafood — Straight from the Fleet
Peniche's fishing fleet is one of the largest on the Silver Coast, and the town's seafood restaurants serve accordingly. Caldeirada de peixe (fisherman's stew), grilled dourada, and enormous prawns are staples at every table. The indoor fish market by the harbour sells fresh catch at 7am — surf camps send their cooks here before the morning session. For the full experience, eat at one of the harbour-front restaurants on a Tuesday evening when the day boats come in.
Fortaleza de Peniche — Civil War Prison
The 16th-century fortress that dominates Peniche's headland served as a political prison under the Salazar dictatorship — Álvaro Cunhal, later head of the Portuguese Communist Party, famously escaped from here in 1960. Today it's a museum documenting resistance to the Estado Novo regime and offering sweeping views of the Atlantic. The inner courtyard hosts evening concerts in summer. Admission is €3. Combine with the Thursday market in the town centre for a half-day of history.
