Where the Algarve Shows Its Soul
Lagos is the town that defines the western Algarve in most travellers' memories — a compact historic centre of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, surrounded by the most dramatic coastal scenery in Portugal. The ochre and terracotta limestone cliffs that frame the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade have been photographed millions of times, yet they remain startling in person: the colour, the scale, and the quality of light at different times of day make the same walk feel different every visit.
The town occupies a sheltered bay between two headlands — the Boa Vista peninsula to the west and Meia Praia to the east — which keeps the harbour calm while the Atlantic beaches face into the prevailing W swell. In summer (June–September), Lagos draws a cosmopolitan mix of European visitors, digital nomads, and surfers; in September–October it finds its best self: warm sea, smaller crowds, affordable accommodation, and the kind of long lunches that stretch into dinner.
Day trips from Lagos cover some of Portugal's most dramatic coastline: Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente (30 minutes west) mark the southwestern tip of Europe, where Prince Henry established his navigation school and the sea crashes into cliffs from two directions simultaneously. Praia da Arrifana (45 minutes north on the Costa Vicentina) is a more remote, unspoiled surf beach under a ruined castle. The Vicentine Coast Natural Park begins here and extends north to Sines — one of Europe's last genuinely wild Atlantic coastlines.
Getting to Lagos from Lisbon takes approximately 2.5 hours by direct train (from Oriente or Entrecampos stations) or 2 hours by car via the A2. The town itself is entirely walkable, and the sea cave kayak tours, boat trips, and beaches are within 20 minutes of the train station on foot.

Ponta da Piedade — The Sea Caves
Ponta da Piedade is the Algarve's most dramatic natural landmark — a 20-metre headland of ochre limestone sculpted by Atlantic waves into arches, grottos, and sea stacks that glow orange in the afternoon sun. A steep staircase descends to the waterline where small fishing boats wait to take visitors into the caves and through the arches. Morning boat tours (€10–15, 45 minutes) run from the jetty at the base; alternatively, the cliffside walk from the city beach is 3km round-trip with extraordinary views at every turn.
Meia Praia — The Long Beach
Meia Praia stretches 4km east from Lagos marina — a wide, sheltered Atlantic beach with clean surf, warm (22°C) summer water, and a handful of good beach bars. The western end is sheltered by the marina and is shallower and calmer, ideal for children and casual swimmers. The eastern stretches catch more swell and are popular with beginner surfers. Two kite schools operate here in summer, taking advantage of the afternoon W wind that funnels along the bay.
Lagos Seafood — Cataplana & Percebes
Lagos's fish market and seafood restaurants define the town's food culture. The cataplana — a traditional Algarve clam, prawn, and chouriço stew cooked in a copper pressure clam — is the signature dish: rich, fragrant, and served with crusty bread and house white. Percebes (barnacles), grilled espetada, and fresh dourada appear on most menus. The best restaurants cluster around Rua 25 de Abril in the old town and the marina. Avoid tourist-trap menus with photos; the unmarked terrace places almost always serve better food.
Kayak & Paddleboard — Exploring the Caves
Self-guided kayak and paddleboard tours from the city beach provide the most immersive way to explore the arches and sea caves between Lagos and Ponta da Piedade. Morning sessions (calm, clear water) are best — rental shops open at 9am. Guided kayak tours add more route coverage and cave navigation for first-timers; most depart from the beach at 9:30am and return by noon. On calm summer days, snorkelling through the arches reveals crystal-clear water and abundant marine life.
Old Town & Forte da Ponta da Bandeira
Lagos's historic centre is contained within the original Moorish and medieval city walls — cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, a 16th-century fort (Forte da Ponta da Bandeira) guarding the harbour entrance, and the Igreja de Santo António with its ornate 18th-century interior. The former slave market (Mercado de Escravos) in the old customs house dates from 1444 and is one of Europe's oldest, now housing a museum documenting Portugal's role in the Atlantic slave trade. Sagres & Cabo de São Vicente
Sagres, 30km west of Lagos, occupies one of Europe's most dramatic headlands — the southwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula where Prince Henry the Navigator established his famous 15th-century navigation school. Cabo de São Vicente, another 6km north, is one of the world's most famous lighthouse capes — a 60-metre cliff with nothing but ocean to the west.
