The Douro Valley is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions — legally defined in 1756, three decades before Bordeaux — and one of its most spectacular landscapes. UNESCO inscribed the Upper Douro Valley as a World Heritage Site in 2001, recognising a cultural landscape of extraordinary beauty: schist terraces carved into steep hillsides that drop hundreds of metres to the winding Douro River, planted with the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz grape varieties that produce Port wine and DOC table wines.

The valley is accessed via two iconic routes from Porto: the Douro train line (2 hours to Pinhão), which hugs the river through gorges and terraces before arriving at the valley's most photogenic station; and the A4/IP4 motorway followed by descending single-track roads to the riverside quintas. Both are worthwhile — do the train one way and drive the other.

Wine touring in the Douro is different from the Alentejo or Algarve. The estates (quintas) are working farms that require advance booking for visits; several offer accommodation combining the quinta stay with meals, tastings, and guided vineyard walks. The harvest season (September–October) is the most dramatic time to visit — the terraces fill with workers, and some estates allow travellers to participate in the grape picking.

The best Douro wine tour involves at least two nights in the valley: one night at a riverside quinta (Pinhão or Régua area), one day for Quinta do Crasto and Quinta do Vallado visits, and an evening on the Pinhão promenade. Add the vintage train and a river cruise for a four-night itinerary that covers the valley comprehensively.
